The Legacy of Kizhi

Potli massage, known natively in Kerala Ayurveda as "Kizhi" or "Pinda Sweda", is one of the most effective traditional healing therapies for musculoskeletal pain. Historically, it was a favored treatment in the royal courts of Rajasthan and southern India to rejuvenate warriors and royalty alike.

How it works: Tightly packed muslin cloth bundles (the 'potli') are filled with specific, dry medicinal herbs. During the treatment, these bundles are rhythmically dipped into hot, medicated Ayurvedic oils and pressed firmly along the body's energy channels and affected joints.

The combination of intense, penetrating heat and the transdermal absorption of the herbs provides profound, lasting relief that standard hands-only massages cannot achieve.

What Happens During Your Potli Massage Session

01

Consultation

Fresh herb bundles are individually prepared and placed in medicated Ayurvedic oil to reach therapeutic temperature.

02

Preparation

An herbal steam warm-up opens the pores and begins the process of transdermal herb absorption before the potlis make contact.

03

The Treatment

Rhythmic bundle application—heated potlis are pressed and tapped along energy channels, joints, and stiff muscle groups.

04

Recovery

A cool-down and oil finish—the body rests and absorbs residual medicinal oils; rest is advised before showering (wait 2–3 hours).

How Your Body Responds

Herbal Heat Therapy
The combination of moist heat and medicinal herb vapour penetrates 3–4 cm into soft tissue, reaching joints and deep muscle layers unreachable by hands alone.
Anti-Inflammatory Benefits
Dashamoola root extract and turmeric vapour actively inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes, reducing swelling measurably within a single session.
Joint Mobility Improvement
Regular sessions increase synovial fluid production and loosen calcified tissue around arthritic joints, restoring a natural range of motion.
Muscle Soreness Relief
The rhythmic thumping of hot bundles forces fresh, oxygenated blood into areas of lactic acid build-up, accelerating recovery by hours.
Authentic Ayurvedic Experience
Beyond physical relief, the medicinal aroma of camphor and eucalyptus, combined with the ritual precision, creates a profoundly grounding therapeutic ceremony.
Questions

Potli Massage FAQ

Will the hot bundles burn my skin?
No. The therapist tests the temperature of the potli on their own hand before applying it to your body. They also tap it quickly at first, only resting it on the skin once it has cooled to a comfortable, deep heat.
Does it smell very strong?
Yes. Unlike a Swedish massage which uses sweet floral aromas, Potli uses traditional Ayurvedic medicinal herbs (like camphor, eucalyptus, and roots). The smell is earthy, pungent, and highly therapeutic.
Should I shower right after the massage?
We strongly advise waiting at least 2 to 3 hours before showering. The medicinal oils and herbal extracts need time to fully penetrate the skin and reach the joints to be effective.
Who should NOT get a Potli massage?
Avoid this treatment if you have a high fever, acute inflammatory skin conditions, severe hypertension, or if you are pregnant. If you have any medical concerns, please consult your doctor first.
Do you reuse the same herbal bundles on different clients?
Absolutely not. Every client receives freshly prepared muslin potli bundles. Hygiene and authenticity are our highest priorities.
Is there any manual massage involved, or is it just the bundles?
It is a combination. The therapist uses their hands to apply the base oil with long strokes, and then uses the heated bundles to stamp, press, and rub the muscles and joints.
